My 2001 Tacoma came
with the RS3000 VIP (Vehicle Intrusion Protection) alarm system. If
you dont have a manual, here you will find most of the information that
you would need to change settings, program remotes and more. This
is basically the manual that I have typed in. I do not have
the installation manual that covers the physical installation of the
alarm into the vehicle. I have heard many different stories
about what years these alarms were used. I read elsewhere
that they were only used on vehicles up to 1999 or 2000, but this is
what was on my 2001 double cab. I have also heard of people
with 2002+ Tundras that have this alarm.
ENJOY!

Congratulations
on your choice of the Toyota VIP RS3000 security system
to protect your vehicle. To get the most
from this product, we strongly recommend that you
read this owners guide completely to understand all
of the features and functions of the system.
The
RS3000 provides complete vehicle security through
point of entry monitoring and glass breakage detection.
While armed, the system is triggered when
a door or the trunk (or hatch) is opened*, or when
a window is tapped on or broken. When triggered,
the vehicle's horn sounds and the lights, both exterior
and interior, flash in a unique pattern. Perhaps
more importantly, the vehicle's starter is disabled
at the same time, preventing engine start. In
addition to the comprehensive protection, the RS3000
provides remote control convenience, enabling you
to arm and disarm the system and lock and unlock the
doors without having to use a key.
The
RS3000 offers you operation options, including Passive
(Automatic) Arming, and Valet Mode (security features
off); both of these operation modes are described
in detail in this manual.
*When the system is passively (automatically) armed,
there is an entrance delay that elapses when a door
is opened before the system is triggered.

FUNCTIONS
|
REMOTE
ARMING / DISARMING |
The
RS3000 may be ARMED or DISARMED with either of the supplied
REMOTE CONTROLS. If the vehicle is equipped with power
locks, the doors are locked when the system is ARMED and
unlocked when the system is DISARMED.
|
PASSIVE
(AUTOMATIC ARMING) |
The
RS3000 may be programmed to automatically ARM and protect
the vehicle 15 seconds after the ignition key is removed,
the vehicle exited, and the last door or trunk hatch is
closed.
|
PASSIVE
DISARMING |
The
RS3000 may be DISARMED with the vehicle's ignition key when
the system was PASSIVELY ARMED.
|
VALET
MODE |
The
RS3000 allows the user to suspend security functions, enter
and exit the vehicle without the system PASSIVE ARMING or
TRIGGERING, and to use the REMOTE CONTROLS just to lock
and unlock the doors. (PANIC MODE still works though)
|
PANIC
MODE |
The
user may draw attention to the vehicle by depressing the
top button on the REMOTE CONTROL for over 2 seconds. When
this mode is activated, the lights flash and the horn sounds
for 57 seconds, or until PANIC MODE is deactivated. This
mode may be activated at any time.
|
POINT-OF-ENTRY
PROTECTION |
The
RS3000 will TRIGGER if a door, trunk or hatch is opened
while the system is ARMED. (If the system was
PASSIVE ARMED, the ENTRY DELAY must pass before TRIGGERING
occurs.)
|
GLASS
BREAKAGE SENSOR |
The
RS3000 uses a microphone mounted in the STATUS MONITOR to
sense the noise from tapping on window glass, or glass breakage,
and TRIGGER the system. It is fine tuned to "listen"
for this type of noise and ignore other sounds.
|
STATUS
MONITOR |
This
panel houses the GLASS BREAKAGE SENSOR microphone, and the
flashing LED light that indicates the operating status of
the security system.
|
STARTER

the system while TRIGGERING occurs:
Press and
release the REMOTE CONTROL's top button once.
Or
Insert the ignition key, and turn it to "ON-ACC-ON".
*The GLASS
BREAKAGE SENSOR TRIGGERS the system in two ways: When
the sound of tapping, or breaking glass is detected, the system
will first activate the vehicle's horn and exterior lights for
20 seconds as a warning; the vehicle's starter is
not disabled. If the glass is tapped on or
broken within 5 seconds of the first detection, the system will
TRIGGER for 57 seconds; the vehicle's starter is disabled.
**When PASSIVELY
ARMED, the ENTRANCE DELAY (factory set to 15 seconds) must elapse
before the system will TRIGGER when a door is opened.
***In some
vehicles, the interior lights will not flash, but instead just
light up during TRIGGERING.
|
|
AUTOMATIC
DOOR LOCKING / UNLOCKING
|
The RS3000
is programmed to automatically lock your doors when the ignition
switch is turned to "ON" or "START", and
unlock them when the ignition switch is turned to "LOCK"
or "ACC". This feature will operate
only once (AUTOMATIC LOCK then AUTOMATIC UNLOCK) before a door
is opened and closed again. The AUTOMATIC LOCKING
feature will not work while a door is open.
NOTE: The
factory preset operation of this feature is AUTO DOOR LOCK /
UNLOCK "ON". If you would like it changed
to "OFF", refer to the PROGRAMMING AND ADJUSTMENTS
section.
|
INTERIOR
LIGHT ACTIVATION
|
When REMOTE
ARMED, the RS3000 turns on the vehicle's interior lights for
3 seconds; when PASSIVE ARMED, the interior lights are turned
on for 3 seconds after the EXIT DELAY elapses. When
REMOTE DISARMING, the interior lights are turned on for 30 seconds*,
allowing you to easily see inside your vehicle at night before
entering. During TRIGGERING, the interior lights
are flashed**.
*Or until
the doors are closed.
**In some vehicles, the interior lights will not flash, but
instead just light up during TRIGGERING.
|
|
|
When
using a REMOTE CONTROL to ARM the RS3000, the PIEZO "CHIRPER"
will emit a continuous sound for up to 10 seconds if a door, trunk
(or hatch) was left open; the system will not ARM. After
closing the open door, or trunk (or hatch), the REMOTE CONTROL
button must be pressed again to ARM the system.
|
|
The RS3000
alerts you upon DISARMING the system, that an intrusion attempt
was made on your vehicle while you were away, and that the system
was TRIGGERED.

Open the door, and sit in the drivers seat.
The ENTRANCE DELAY begins
The STATUS Monitor's LED flashes
rapidly.
Insert the key into the ignition switch, and turn it to "START"
The exterior lights flash 3 times.
The starter will not start, because
the STARTER DISABLE function is still active.
Turn the ignition key back to "OFF", then "START"
again.
The STARTER DISABLE feature is
deactivated.
The engine starts.
|
|
If
power to the RS3000 ECU (computer) is lost while the system is
ARMED, the system goes to "sleep"; when power is restored,
the system TRIGGERS immediately.
|
|
|
|
The maximum
range for the RS3000's REMOTE CONTROLS is 50 feet. However,
several factors that may affect your REMOTE CONTROL's actual
performance, include, but are not limited to:
--The REMOTE
CONTROL battery's strength* (weak battery = decreased performance)
--Your position
relative to the vehicle (dependent on the system's antenna wire
location)
--Objects
in the path between you and your vehicle
--Your surroundings
(in a parking structure, out in the open, etc.)
--Outside
electrical interference caused by high tension power lines,
etc.
*As the
REMOTE CONTROL's battery becomes weaker, the LED indicator becomes
dimmer. When you notice the LED becoming dimmer,
you should replace the battery.

In many
areas, there are regulations concerning the duration of a vehicle's
security system TRIGGERING (horn sounding) before the vehicle
is towed, or ticketed. The RS3000 was designed with
these regulations in mind.
If the system
is TRIGGERED by the opening of a door or trunk (or hatch), the
TRIGGER duration is 57 seconds. At the end of this
period, the system will reset.
If the system
is TRIGGERED by the GLASS BREAKAGE SENSOR sensing that the sound
of tapping or breaking of glass, the initial TRIGGER duration
is 20 seconds. If the GLASS BREAKAGE SENSOR senses
tapping or breaking of the glass again within 5 seconds, the
system will TRIGGER for 57 seconds before resetting.
The system
can be TRIGGERED a total of 10 times (57 second cycles, for
a total of 9 1/2 minutes) before the horn will not sound any
more (until the system is DISARMED). The STARTER
DISABLE function continues to operate after the 10 triggering
cycles, until the system is DISARMED and reset.

PIEZO
OPERATION MODE
One of
the first things that I did was to turn off the annoying "beep"
that would happen every time I locked or unlocked the truck. To
turn this feature on or off, follow these directions:
The factory
setting for the PIEZO operation mode is ON. When set
to "OFF", only operation during REMOTE ARMING &
DISARMING is affected.
1: Insert
the key into the ignition and turn it to on (not acc).
2: Using one remote control, press and hold both buttons
at the same time for over 2 seconds, until the status monitor's
LED turns on.
***You must perform the next steps within 30 seconds***
To turn the piezo off: Press and release the
bottom remote control button once. The piezo chirper
chirps once, and the exterior lights flash once. Turn
the ignition switch to the lock position. The piezo chirper
chirps 3 times, and the exterior lights flash 3 times.
To turn
the piezo on: Press and release the bottom remote
control button twice. The piezo chirper chirps twice,
and the exterior lights flash twice. Turn the ignition
switch to the lock position. The piezo chirper chirps 3
times, and the exterior lights flash 3 times.
If you do
not turn the ignition key to lock, or exceed 30 seconds during
the programming steps, the status monitor's LED will turn off
and the previous operation mode will remain.

From the factory,
the entry delay time is set to 15 seconds.
To adjust the ENTRY DELAY time, follow the steps below:
1: Sit
in the drivers seat with all doors and the trunk (or hatch) closed.
2: Insert
the key into the ignition switch and turn it to on (not acc) 5
times (on-lock, on-lock, on-lock, on-lock, on) within
a 10 second period. The status monitor's LED turns
on, and the piezo chirper sounds once.
***You must perform the next steps within 30 seconds***
5 second delay: Open and close the drivers door once.
Turn the ignition switch to the lock position. The
piezo chirper chirps once and the exterior lights flash once.
15 Second
delay: Open and close the drivers door twice. Turn
the ignition switch to the lock position. The piezo
chirper chirps twice and the exterior lights flash twice.
30 second
delay: Open and close the drivers door three times.
Turn the ignition switch to the lock position. The
piezo chirper chirps three times and the exterior lights flash
three times.
If you do
not turn the ignition key to lock, or exceed 30 seconds during
the programming steps, the status monitor's LED will turn off
and the previous operation mode will remain.

Automatic
Door Locking / Unlocking Function:
The factory
setting for the automatic door locking and unlocking function
is on.
1: Sit
in the drivers seat with the drivers door open.
2: Insert
the key into the ignition switch and turn it to on (not acc) 5
times (on-lock, on-lock, on-lock, on-lock, on) within a 10
second period. The status monitors LED turns on, and
the piezo chirper sounds once.
***You must
perform the next steps within 30 seconds***
Select
the operating mode:
Automatic
door locking and unlocking on: Close the drivers
door. Turn the ignition switch to the lock position.
The piezo chirper sounds once, and the exterior lights
flash once.
Automatic
door locking and unlocking off: Close the drivers
door once, then open and close it one more time. Turn
the ignition switch to the lock position. The piezo
chirper sounds twice, and the exterior lights flash twice.
If you do
not turn the ignition key to lock, or exceed 30 seconds during
the programming steps, the status monitor's LED will turn off
and the previous operation mode will remain.

Remote
Control Programming
The RS3000
ECU can be programmed to be operated by as many as 4 remote controls.
Additionally, the provided remote controls top and
bottom buttons may be assigned to operate another 1998 or 1999
model vehicles RS3000 security system, and both buttons can be
programmed to operate the system in one vehicle. To
add or delete a remote control, you must access the RS3000 ECU
(computer), location varies by vehicle and model.
To program
(add) a remote control to the system:
1: Insert
the key into the ignition switch and turn it to on.
2: Press
and hold the ECU's programming switch for 3 seconds. The
status monitors LED turns on for 5 seconds.
***You must perform the next step within 5 seconds***
3: Press
and release a remote controls top or bottom button. Either
button on your remote control can be programmed to operate the
RS3000. The status monitors LED turns off. The
piezo chirper chirps once. The exterior lights flash
once.
4: Turn
off the ignition. The ECU will now operate with the
remote control just programmed.
Note: The
factory preset operation is for the top button on both remote
controls to operate your system; the bottom button is not programmed.
To prevent accidental erasure of a remote controls
code, we recommend that you program all your remote controls at
the same time.
To erase
all remote control codes from the system:
1: Insert
key into the ignition switch, and turn it to on.
2: Press
and hold the ECU programming switch for 3 seconds. The
status monitors LED turns on for 5 seconds.
***You must perform the next step within 5 seconds***
3: Press and hold the ECUs programming switch
for over 2 seconds again. The status monitors LED
turns off, then flashes 3 times. The piezo chirper
chirps 3 times and the exterior lights flash 3 times.
4: Turn
off the ignition. The ECU has cleared all remote control
codes. Until another remote control is programmed,
the system will not work with any remote control.

Glass
Breakage Sensor Sensitivity Adjustment
The following procedure is listed for information purposes.
Contact the service department at your Toyota dealer to
set up an appointment to have them make any necessary adjustments
to the Glass Breakage Sensor.
(That is what the manual says!)
1: Locate
the glass breakage sensor controller in the vehicle. (Location
varies by vehicle and vehicle model) Disassemble the
vehicle as necessary to access the controller.
2: Verify
the system is in the passive arming on or off mode, not valet
mode. Program as necessary.
NOTE: Before
adjusting the glass breakage sensor's sensitivity, confirm that
it was adjusted to the vehicle specific, predetermined level for
the vehicle. You may find the proper setting level in the
installation instructions for this system. (I do
not have the installation instructions.)
To test
the glass breakage sensor sensitivity:
1: Close
all doors, windows, and the trunk or hatch.
2: Arm
the system with the remote control.
3: With
the tip of the ignition key, tap the center of the drivers door
window with moderate force (from outside the vehicle). The
RS3000 should be triggered and the alarm sound for 20 seconds.
Obviously, daunt tap so hard as to break or chip
the window!
If the system
does not trigger, the sensitivity may be too low. Tap
the drivers door window again with slightly more force. If
the system still does not trigger, the sensitivity should be adjusted.
Also, the system should not trigger when the drivers
door glass is tapped with light force. If this is
the case, the sensitivity should be adjusted.
To adjust
the glass breakage sensor sensitivity:
1: Turn
the glass breakage sensor controller adjustment screw on "click"
up to increase sensitivity or one click down to decrease sensitivity.
2: Re-check
the sensitivity as described above.
3: Repeat
the previous two steps until the desired results are achieved.
NOTE: Too
high of a sensitivity level will result in false alarms; the RS3000
may trigger for no apparent reason.

Remote
Control Battery Replacement
When the operating
range of the remote control diminishes and/or the LED on the remote
control has become weak or dim, battery replacement is required.
You may obtain a replacement battery for your Toyota
dealer or purchase one from a drug store etc.. The
battery type is a Lithium CR2025. We recommend
replacing the batteries in your remote controls once a year to
maintain optimum operating range.
Precautions: Always
handle the battery using a dry cloth. Do not handle
a battery with bare hands; body oils may interfere with the contacts
and cause a malfunction. The expected battery lift
(with normal usage) is 1 year. The life of the batteries
in the supplied remote controls may be shorter than 1 year. (As
of the time of writing this, the batteries in my remote controls
are just over 3 years old, and are still working fine.)
Battery
Replacement
1: Remove
the screw securing the two halves of the remote control case.
2: Remove
the back cover
3: Remove
the old battery, using caution to not bend the battery contacts.
4: Insert
the new battery, positive (+) side down.
5: Reassemble
the case, and test the remote control.
NOTE: Replacing
the remote controls battery will not erase the remote controls
code from the ECU (computer).
