Setting up camp Friday night. There was a light wind, but that wind made it COLD!! There was still snow on the ground from the night before. I would estimate the low temp that night to be between 35-40°F. |
The next morning was clear and warmer. A picture of the lake, the runway clearly visible. From the overlook, we watched people come and go around Oak Flats campground far below, including a few people doing donuts in their vehicles on the runway. |
Saturday we just did.... nothing. The major activity was feeding the camp fire that we had going all day. The weather warmed up quite a bit, the snow was all melted by the late afternoon. Perfect weather. |
A large red ant hill a ways from our camp. |
The kids ran all over the camp area during the day. Zack practiced his Ninja skills, in the end, becoming completely invisible. In the afternoon, we gave them a quick compass lesson. It was a basic course, go North until you find this landmark, then east to this one etc., until you located a prize at the end. |
Emma on a final leg, the yellow arrow showing the prize that she had not yet spotted. |
Since the adults didn't want to do much other than feed the fire and relax, we had to trick the kids into keeping us well stocked with firewood. Here the kids pose with one of the piles they collected. |

Saturday night sunset. |
Saturday night and Sunday morning was very windy. Although the weather was warmer still, we woke up Sunday morning to the tent being blown around. The wind actually cracked one of the fiberglass poles on our tent, I guess we should have used all the stakes and tied it down! Mark testing out the rock slider on his new project Tacoma. |
This was the first test run since the SAS, so now he has a few more items to fine tune. |
It was also the first run for the camp trailer. It follows along quite nice behind the Tacoma. The pintle hitch lets the trailer move as it needs to during off-road driving. |
After we packed up, we headed down towards the lake. |
So what do the kids do while we drove around? Watched DVD's in the back... in this case, it was the 3rd showing of "Happily Never After". |

Some Elk down by the runway. We toured the campsites down by the lake and picked a good one to aim for during a later trip this summer. |
We stopped down on the Eel River for a late lunch before we hit the highway home. |
We met some fellow Toyota owners during lunch, here one of them heads across the river. |
Heading out for home. |
